Humans have been using chile peppers for thousands of years. Peppers originally came from different types of Capsicum plants naturally growing in the wild. Today, you’ll find over 50,000 varieties of chile pepper cultivars most of them developed through selective breeding and hybridization. Interestingly, though there are different types of chilies, they belong to only five different species in the Capsicum genus, viz. Capsicum annuum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum baccatum, and Capsicum pubescent. Also, there are about 25 known species in the Capsicum genus, most of them being non-domesticated.
